Here I am at the birthplace of Rapala in Vaaksy, Finland.

Discover the story behind Rapala lures and take a look behind the scenes.

Lauri Rapala, the man, the myth, the legend!

From a piece of wood to a global predator fishing icon

Some brands are not born behind a desk, but on the water. Rapala is perhaps one of the best examples of that.

The story starts in Finland in 1936, with Lauri Rapala. He wanted to create something that behaved like an injured baitfish. Not because it looked good in a catalogue, but because he had seen with his own eyes what really triggers predators.

What started as a simple piece of wood grew into one of the most recognised names in predator fishing. Rapala did not become famous through empty promises, but through lures that gave generations of anglers confidence.

From pike to perch, from zander to trout: the action of Rapala lures has proven itself all over the world.

The lure where it all started..!

Lauri Rapala and the birth of the Original Floater

The foundation of the Rapala story is the Original Floater. Lauri Rapala noticed that predators often strike at a weakened or injured fish. He translated that idea into a lure with a subtle, natural swimming action.

The Original Floater was born.

Made from balsa, a lightweight wood that is perfect for creating lively lure action. The result was a lure that not only swam beautifully, but also reacted naturally during the retrieve, pauses and in current.

For many anglers, the Rapala Original Floater is still a true classic. Not because it is old, but because the concept still makes sense: a slim baitfish imitation with a tempting wobble that continues to trigger predators.

How the passing of Icon Marilyn Monroe gained great visability for Rapala.

How Rapala became so incredibly well known

In August 1962, Rapala appeared in LIFE Magazine. That same issue also featured major news about the death of Marilyn Monroe.

Because Marilyn Monroe was worldwide news at that moment, that particular issue of LIFE Magazine sold in huge numbers. As a result, Rapala suddenly reached millions of readers. According to Rapala, that issue became the best-selling LIFE Magazine edition, and after that, almost every American sport angler knew the Original Floater.

The whole process..!

Why balsa is so important for Rapala lures

A big part of the typical Rapala action comes from the use of balsa. This lightweight wood gives the lures their own unique character. Where some lures move in a very tight and mechanical way, balsa often creates that natural, almost nervous action.

Rapala taught balsa how to swim.

A lure is not just a body shape with a lip and hooks. The balance, body profile, diving lip and finish all have to work together perfectly. Only then do you get that typical Rapala action the brand has become famous for.

The place where people test lures, day in day out until they are perfected!

Every Rapala is tested: no coincidence on the water

An important detail is that the lures do not simply roll out of the factory. Rapala is known for testing and tuning its lures. The idea behind this is simple: a lure has to run straight and have the right action before it reaches the angler.

For predator anglers, that makes a real difference. Especially when trolling, casting or fishing in current, you want your lure to run stable and true. A well-tuned lure gives confidence. And confidence is one of the most important things when fishing.

The Countdown: control over depth and speed

After the Original Floater, Rapala introduced another legendary model: the Countdown. Where the Original Floater is a floating lure, the Countdown was developed to sink in a controlled way.

That made this lure especially interesting for anglers who wanted to fish a specific water layer more accurately. You let the lure sink, count it down, and then start your retrieve. This allows you to fish much more precisely above weed beds, along drop-offs, near structure or over deeper holding predators.

The Countdown is not only a classic, but also a very practical lure. Especially when predators are not actively hunting high in the water column, a controlled sinking lure can make all the difference.

A classic on it's own! (and a very nice color to be honest haha!)

The Shad Rap: a worldwide favourite

Another model that cannot be left out of the Rapala story is the Shad Rap. This lure was introduced as a compact baitfish-shaped lure with a strong, natural swimming action. In the PDF, the Shad Rap is mentioned as one of Rapala’s most popular models.

The Shad Rap is loved because it is so versatile. You can cast it, but it is also excellent for trolling behind the boat. Thanks to its shape and swimming action, it appeals to many different predators, including pike, perch, zander and trout.

For anglers looking for a reliable lure with a natural action, the Shad Rap is still a very strong choice.

A very unique color design which can be found on all Elite models!

Rapala Elite: classics with a modern finish

One of Rapala’s strengths is the way they keep developing their classics. In the PDF, models such as the Floater Elite, Countdown Elite and Shad Rap Elite are shown. These lures build on the original successes, but feature a more modern finish, improved detailing and enhanced performance.

The Elite series is interesting for anglers who appreciate the character of the classic Rapala models, but also want to benefit from modern lure technology. Think refined colour patterns, improved casting performance, more detailed finishes and an action that fits the way we fish for predators today.

That is exactly what makes Rapala so strong: tradition at the core, with innovation where it matters.

New colours with a nod to the past

Besides technique, colour also plays a major role. New “Gilded” colours have been brought to life. These colours are recognisable by the gilded head of the lure, a real trigger.

Some colours are natural and subtle, while others are more striking and aggressive. This makes it easier to match your lure to clear water, coloured water, cloudy conditions, bright sunlight or actively feeding predators.

I fish with Rapala since many years now and they always have a go-to lure for every situation!

Why Rapala still works

Rapala did not become famous simply because the brand has been around for a long time. It still works because the foundation is right. The action, balance, finish and confidence on the water make the brand relevant for anglers all over the world.

Whether you fish an Original Floater along shallow margins, count down a Countdown through a deeper water layer, or troll a Shad Rap behind the boat, Rapala lures have earned a clear place in the tackle boxes of many predator anglers.

For us, that is exactly why Rapala remains so interesting. These are not random plugs, but lures with a story, proven action and a clear purpose.

Conclusion: Rapala remains a true name in predator fishing

The story of Rapala starts small: a Finnish angler, a piece of wood and an idea. But that idea grew into a brand that has had a lasting impact on sport fishing.

It is exactly that combination of history, real fishing experience and continuous development that still makes Rapala lures special today.

From the Original Floater to the Countdown, from the Shad Rap to the modern Elite series: Rapala remains a brand built on action, confidence and real experience on the water.

For predator anglers looking for lures with character, history and proven performance, Rapala is still a name you simply cannot ignore.
