Mouse and rat lures for pike

A mouse lure imitates a large prey animal moving on or just under the surface. The sliding, popping, pulsing action makes it deadly in shallow water, along reed beds and over weed beds where most lures foul on every cast.

How to fish mouse and bucktail lures

Fish a mouse lure on a calm, even retrieve with short pauses built in. Varying the speed and letting it stall imitates natural prey behaviour, and that triggers the explosive strike. Keep the rod tip low and give the fish a moment to turn down with the bait before you set the hook.

Bucktail and Mustache combos are fished deeper on a constant retrieve. Accelerating or lifting the rod now and then makes the hair flare and the tail kick, and that change of rhythm often converts a following pike into a biting one. The slow sink and long hang time are what keep the bait in front of the fish while it makes up its mind. Always fish these baits on a wire or heavy fluorocarbon trace, because a pike that eats a bait this size eats all of it.
