Jigheads for predator fishing

A jighead is the smallest part of a softbait rig and the one that decides most of what happens under water. It sets how deep the bait runs, how it behaves on the drop, how much bottom contact you keep, and whether a fish that eats it stays hooked. Change nothing but the head and the same softbait becomes a different lure. The range here runs from round heads and dart jigs to Ned rig, screw-in and system heads, for perch, zander and pike.

Round jigheads: the everyday workhorse

The round head is the one you fish most. It drops straight, keeps a shad or curltail swimming true, and gives a clean lift-and-fall you can read through the rod.

The BKK Hyperlatch Round Jig Hooks are the reference: an extremely sharp BKK hook plus a baitkeeper that locks the softbait in place without tearing it, so the nose still sits where you pushed it after a dozen casts. Dart jigs for reaction bites

A dart jig does the opposite. Instead of lifting straight up, the bait breaks sideways, left and right, in a way the fish cannot predict: a baitfish trying to escape. That pulls a strike out of predators that follow without committing, and it is why dart jigs shine in clear water and on hard-fished spots.

The Toppies Tungsten Dart Jig is the precision option. The head answers the smallest tick of the rod tip, which makes it a real finesse tool for casting and for vertical work, and tungsten keeps it compact while telegraphing the bottom up the line. Ned rig, screw-in and system heads

Not every situation wants a standard head. The Charlie’s Tungsten Ned Rig is built for small buoyant stickbaits fished slowly along the bottom, the presentation to fall back on when perch have shut down. Screw-in heads like the Berkley Screw-In Jighead thread into the nose of the bait instead of being pushed on, which stops soft bodies sliding down the shank. And some softbaits are a closed system: Fiiish Black Minnow heads are matched to their own bodies, N2 for the 90, N2.5 for the 105 and N3 for the 120. Hooks: BKK and VMC

Whatever the head does, the hook has to hold. BKK hooks are trusted worldwide by predator anglers for their sharpness, strength and consistency, which counts most when bites are soft and the point has to find purchase on its own. Matching the jighead to the softbait

Head and bait are one lure, and the combination decides the action. Too much weight drowns the tail; too small a hook buries itself in the body and costs you fish.

• Size the hook to the body so the point sits clear of the back
• Keep the head light enough that the tail still works on the fall
• Push the bait on straight, because a crooked bait spins and the action dies
• Change one thing at a time, head weight or bait, never both

Choosing the right weight

Depth, current and the mood of the fish decide the weight, not habit. Fish the lightest head that still keeps you in touch with the bottom, and go heavier only when depth, current or wind takes that contact away. Perch want the light end of the range, zander and pike the heavier one.
