Pike Lures, Tested on Real Pike Water

Pike are ambush hunters. They sit in the weed, along a drop-off or under a bridge and wait for one thing to swim past that looks worth the effort. Catching them consistently comes down to showing the right profile, the right action and the right speed for that day — and that is exactly what this collection is built around. Every lure on this page is a bait we fish for pike ourselves, on Dutch polders, big Scandinavian lakes and fast European rivers, before it earns a place in the range.

Which Pike Lure Should You Pick?

  • Pike softbaits — big paddle tails, shads and V-tails from roughly 12 to 30 cm. The all-round choice: on a jighead in deeper water, or slow-rolled just over the weed in the shallows.
  • Pike hardbaits — crankbaits, twitchbaits and minnows that hold their action in cold water and cover water fast when you are searching for active fish.
  • Jerkbaits — erratic, aggressive and hard to ignore. Deadly over shallow weed beds and around structure, especially for reaction strikes.
  • Swimbaits and glidebaits — the big-fish approach. A wide S-glide triggers the biggest pike in the water, particularly in autumn and early winter.
  • Mouses and bucktails — flash, vibration and a large silhouette for coloured water or low light.
  • Topwaters — for warm summer mornings over shallow weed, when the strike is half the reason you went fishing.

Pike Through the Season

Spring — pike sit shallow and recover after spawning. Smaller softbaits, shallow-running hardbaits and a slow retrieve outfish anything aggressive.

Summer — weed beds, topwaters and early mornings. Fish the edges of the vegetation and keep the bait moving.

Autumn — the big-bait season. Pike feed hard before winter, and this is when swimbaits, glidebaits and softbaits of 20 cm and up come into their own.

Winter — deep, slow and precise. Heavier jigheads, long pauses and a bait that still works at minimal speed.

Don’t Forget the Terminal Tackle

Pike have teeth, and a fish swimming off with your lure is the one result nobody wants. Always fish a wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader, check your hooks and rigs before you cast, and bring a proper landing net and unhooking gear so the fish goes back strong.
