Okuma makes up the largest part of our reel range. The line-up runs from light finesse sizes for perch and trout right up to a saltwater build for seabass and heavy predator work.

Baitcasting Reels

Baitcasters give you casting accuracy and direct cranking power, which is what you want the moment lures get heavier and hooks get stronger.

Our rods come from 13 Fishing. The Omen Black is the one most of our customers end up fishing: a light Toray graphite blank with Fuji Alconite guides that stays sensitive without giving up hook-setting power.

Choosing the Right Rod and Reel

Predator fishing asks a lot of your gear: fast strikes, hard fights and a wide range of lure weights. A few things decide whether a setup works for you.

• Casting weight first. Match the rod to the lures you actually fish, not to the biggest one in your box. A 10-30 g rod fishing 50 g softbaits is a broken rod waiting to happen
• Sensitivity for soft bites. Zander and perch often just stop the lure. A light graphite blank lets you feel that tap
• Drag over raw power. A big pike does the damage in the first three seconds. A smooth drag that gives line under a headshake beats a locked-down one
• Reel size to line class. 2000 to 3000 for perch and zander, 4000 to 5000 for pike, big softbaits and seabass
• Retrieve speed. High-speed gearing picks up slack fast, which matters with jerkbaits and topwater; standard ratios give you more cranking power under load

Spinning or Baitcasting?

Spinning gear is the easier place to start and covers most predator fishing: jigging soft baits, cranking, finesse work for perch. Baitcasting comes into its own with heavier lures, thicker braid and repeated accurate casts to structure — pike fishing with swimbaits and glidebaits, or working a bank all day with hardbaits. Many anglers here end up with one of each.
