Strike Pro at Charlie's Fishing: the Guppie hard tail bait for big pike

Strike Pro is a lure maker based in Taiwan that has been designing and building fishing lures since 1973, with a large presence on lure markets around the world. At Charlie's Fishing we stock the Strike Pro Guppie, a sinking hard tail bait made for big pike. Below you find what it is for and how to rig it.

Strike Pro Guppie: sinking tail bait with a screw-on tail

The Strike Pro Guppie has a compact hard body of 13.5 cm and a soft tail that brings the total length to 22 cm, at 120 g. The convex body shape from back to belly leaves the hook points exposed for better hook-ups and adds flash and belly roll. At the back sits a spring screw, so you can screw a different tail type on or off and change the character of the lure: with a classic tail it fishes like a jerkbait, gliding from side to side on short pulls, and with a paddle tail it rolls gently on a steady retrieve. It sinks, runs between 1.5 and 3 m, is lead free and comes with 2/0 trebles. More in Pike Hardbaits and Jerkbaits.

Rigging and fishing the Strike Pro Guppie

At 120 g the Guppie needs a heavy jerkbait or casting rod and strong braid. Because it sinks, you can count it down to the depth you want before you start working it: keep it higher over weed beds, and let it sink further along drop-offs and deeper edges. For pike, always fish it on a wire or titanium trace, and check the 2/0 trebles regularly, because sharp points matter on a lure this size. Find traces in Lines and Leaders and spare trebles in Hooks and Rigs.

Which Strike Pro Guppie setup for which situation

• Active pike between 1.5 and 3 m: Guppie with the classic tail, worked with short pulls and pauses like a jerkbait.
• A steady retrieve along weed edges and drop-offs: Guppie with a paddle tail, which rolls gently on a straight retrieve.
• Deeper water: let the Guppie sink first and count it down before you start working it.
• Cold water and slow fish: work it slower and make the pauses longer, so it sinks slowly in front of the fish. See all Pike lures.
