Rapala and VMC have teamed up on something new!
The Rapala Soft Peto Mustache. It is a pike lure that comes out of the pack ready to fish. Tie it on and go!
In this blog you will read what is in the combo, how the two sizes differ and which one suits your water. We also show you how to fish it deeper, and why these colours are so special.
Ready to Fish, Straight From the Pack
Every combo has three parts that are made for each other:
- a Rapala Soft Peto paddle tail body
- a VMC Mustache bucktail head
- a VMC Pike Chain stinger
Everything is already fitted. You don't have to look for the right head, the right stinger or the right hook size. Rapala and VMC did that for you.
The paddle tail kicks wide and the Mustache head adds a lot of volume up front. Together they push a lot of water, so pike notice the lure from far away.
Two Sizes
The two sizes are more than a short and a long version. Each one has its own head and its own stinger.
| 20 cm | 24 cm | |
|---|---|---|
| Head | VMC Mustache Shallow Baby | VMC Mustache Shallow |
| Body | Soft Peto 18 cm | Soft Peto 22 cm |
| Stinger | VMC Pike Chain Rig M | VMC Pike Chain Double |
| Hooks | 1 treble, size 2 | 2 trebles, size 3 |
| Weight | 68 g | 126 g |
The 24 cm: big water, big pike
The 24 cm runs on the full size Mustache Shallow head. It has a big profile and casts a long way. With two trebles on the stinger, a pike that hits the tail still finds a hook.
Pick this one for lakes, big rivers and open water, where you want to cover a lot of ground and are after the bigger fish. You do need a proper big bait rod for it.
The 20 cm: city water and polders
The 20 cm runs on the smaller Mustache Shallow Baby head. It is lighter, easier to cast and fits smaller water better.
This is the one for canals, harbours, ditches and polders. Because the lure is smaller, smaller pike can take it well too. So you hook more of the fish that bite, and the big ones still go for it.
Fishing It Deeper
Out of the pack, the Soft Peto Mustache swims fairly shallow. That is why the heads are called Shallow. But what if the pike are deeper?
Then you clip on an Illex John Weight. You attach it close to the middle of the lure. The lure keeps its action, it just runs deeper. Take it off again and you are back to a shallow lure.
That is exactly how I fished the 24 cm in Sweden. With a John Weight clipped on, I cast it over water up to 8 metres deep and let it sink before I started reeling. It reached the fish near the bottom, and it gave me this beautiful pike.
A tip: count while the lure sinks on your first casts. Then you know how long it takes to reach the depth you want.
Two UV Colours With UV Hooks
There are eight colours, and two of them are UV colours: UV Chartreuse and UV Orange. These two come with VMC UV hooks that match the colour of the lure.
UV colours stand out more in coloured water, in low light and in deeper water. So they are a great choice when you fish the lure deeper with a John Weight.
Colours You Only Get in This Combo
This is what makes these combos unique. You can't buy the Rapala Soft Peto in these colours on its own. Each body was designed to match its own Mustache head, so the colours only exist as a complete combo.
All eight colours: Butternut, Black Widow, Cappuccino, Chartreuse, Ghost, Kingstone, UV Chartreuse and UV Orange.
Don't Forget the Leader
This is a pike lure, so always use a bite-proof leader. A titanium leader like the VMC Titanium Pike Leader keeps the teeth away from your line.
