Hispano Lures
Hispano Lures at Charlie's Fishing: handmade floating soft swimbaits from Spain
Hispano Lures is a Spanish lure maker that builds its soft swimbaits by hand in its own workshop in Spain, one bait at a time. Its Polaris swimbait took more than five years of development and testing before it was released. One idea runs through it: a big soft swimbait that floats at rest, swims on a steady retrieve and lasts longer than a handful of sessions, thanks to a line-through rigging system and detachable hooks. At Charlie's Fishing we stock the Polaris in two sizes, for pike, zander, perch and black bass. Below you find what each one is for.
Hispano Lures Polaris: the floating paddle tail swimbait
The Polaris is a floating soft swimbait with a paddle tail that starts working from the first turn of the handle and gives you a substantial prey profile to cover water with. The Hispano Lures Polaris 147 (14.7 cm, 37 g) is the all-round size: big enough for pike, still a good mouthful for zander, big perch and black bass, and heavy enough to cast a long way over wide flats. It comes in Sugar, Bone, Spanish Shad, Isabelo, Cherry Flow and Gold Rush. The Hispano Lures Polaris 167 (16.7 cm, 51 g) is the same lure in a bigger size, with a larger silhouette and a stronger tail kick for days when predators are on big prey. The extra weight also helps you cast into a headwind and keep control on big open water. It comes in Spanish Shad, Isabelo, Gold Rush, Bleeder Shad, Mango Perch and Magic. Line-through system and detachable hooks
Both Polaris sizes have a line-through system: your leader runs through the body and the treble hangs outside it. Rig the treble on the back for open water, or underneath the bait for a cleaner run over shallow weed: the same lure, two presentations, without rebuilding it. The hooks come off completely, so you can swap a bent treble or store the bait without points buried in the plastic, and the detachable hook system helps reduce damage to the lure and extend its life. The eye at the nose takes extra weight, so the same bait can be pushed into deeper water layers. See all Weights.
How to fish a floating soft swimbait
Wind the Polaris in steadily and it swims under the surface with its paddle tail working. Stop, and it rises slowly instead of sinking into the weed, which makes it a big bait you can fish over shallow vegetation, along weed edges and over sunken wood. Add weight to the nose eye and it becomes a slow-rising bait for deeper water: work it down a drop-off, pause it above structure and let the rise trigger the take. Its casting weight also lets you search larger areas when predators feed away from the bank or the boat.
Which Hispano Lures Polaris for which situation
• One size that does it all for pike, zander, big perch and black bass: Polaris 147.
• Big pike, big prey fish or a lot of wind and distance: Polaris 167.
• Shallow weedy water: either size with the treble underneath, fished without extra weight.
• Deeper edges and drop-offs: add weight to the nose eye.
• Covering open water: a steady retrieve with the treble on the back. See Pike, Zander, Perch and Black Bass.
